... so be sure to find out what the procedures are in your school board and at your
school in particular!
At one school in the Hamilton Wentworth District School Board, the teachers are
responsible for funding their own classroom assessories/decorations. The only
chance they have at being reimbursed for their expenses is if they can prove that
the materials are "learning tools".

In this school, there is a committee consisting of the principal, the secretary, two
teachers and a representative from the student council who decide on how to
spend the board allocated money on major purchases.

At the high SES school (WRDSB), there are two teachers who take a different
perspective on reimbursement and personal contributions.

One teacher "puts in" for everything he purchases for the classroom; he then lets
the administration decide if the expense is "covered" or not, and if he is not
reimbursed, then he is okay with that. He indicated that almost everything can be
reimbursed, even plants, as they contribute to the classroom atmosphere. The only
things in the room he purchased himself were his CDs, his air hockey table and the
mini-foosball.

The second teacher avoids spending more than his board allocated budget at all
costs because he already sees the difference in the quality of education the
children at the high SES school are getting compared to schools that are not as
financially well off. He does not want to exaggerate that difference even more by
purchasing things above and beyond the amount given to each school/teacher.

At the low SES school (GEDSB), teachers must get approval from the vice-principal
before purchasing any items, and then must also submit receipts immediately after
purchasing the item. The primary objects purchased are art supplies. There are set
monthly budgets per division and if the budget runs out before the month is over,
then teachers must purchase their own supplies and not expect reimbursement.
