Traditionally to become a teacher in Ontario, people go to a university for an undergraduate degree
and then go to teacher's college for one year for a Bachelor of Education (BEd). In this process, the
pre-service teacher is presented with three practicum placements typically ranging in length from
three to four weeks. This type of program is called Consecutive Education, because the degrees are
completed consecutively.

Con Ed is a relatively new method of teacher education that allows teacher candidates to work on
two degrees at the same time (hence the name "concurrent"...).

At Laurier Brantford (the "common name" which refers to both the Laurier and Nipissing Campuses
in Brantford), Con Ed students must get a BA from Laurier majoring in Contemporary Studies (CT).
CT is the main program offered at that campus and all students regardless of which program they
are in must major in CT. More information on CT can be found
here.

At Laurier Brantford, Con Ed students are given the option between getting their Primary/Junior
qualifications or their Junior/Intermediate qualifications with their BEd. This decision is made during
the application process (i.e. a student applies to a particular 'division' and cannot switch from one to
the other). More information on the Nipissing program can be found
here.
